Getting rid of cockroaches requires a combination of starving them out, poisoning the nest with slow-acting baits, and breaking their breeding cycle. Bug sprays and foggers usually fail because they only kill the roaches you see while scattering the rest deeper into your walls.

The Eradication Plan

1.Cut off all standing water and food:Step 1 • Immediate.

Cockroaches can survive weeks without food, but only a few days without water. Fix leaky faucets, wipe down sinks and counters before bed, seal dry food in glass or plastic containers, and never leave dirty dishes sitting overnight.

2.Place gel bait in high-traffic spots:Step 2 • Days 1-3.

Apply pea-sized dots of cockroach gel bait (containing active ingredients like Indoxacarb or Fipronil, such as Advion or Combat Gel) under sinks, behind the fridge, around pipe cutouts, and behind the toilet. Roaches eat the poison, return to the nest, die, and spread it to the rest of the colony.

3.Add Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs):Step 3 • Week 1.

Place Insect Growth Regulator discs (like Gentrol Point Source) in key areas. IGRs release a hormone that prevents juvenile roaches from maturing or reproducing, halting population growth even if some survive the bait.

4.Dust hidden cracks with Boric Acid or DE:Step 4 • Week 1-2.

Puff a very light, barely visible film of Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) or Boric Acid inside wall voids, behind outlet covers, and under appliances. Keep it paper-thin—roaches will simply walk around thick piles.

5.Seal entry points and monitor progress:Step 5 • Ongoing.

Use silicone caulk to seal gaps around plumbing pipes, baseboards, and cabinet openings. Place sticky glue traps under sinks to track roach numbers until traps stay empty for 2 to 3 straight weeks.

Critical mistake to avoid: Do not use aerosol sprays (like Raid) while using gel baits. Repellent sprays contaminate the bait and cause roaches to avoid it completely.
